Some Never Remember The Real Heroes: Norman Borlaug 1914-2009

Some are remembered for their music, some are remembered by their leadership, and some are even remembered for their skill on a basketball court or baseball diamond. But chances are good that not too many people will remember Norman Borlaug. Who is Norman Borlaug or more important what did Norman Borlaug do with his life?

Norman Borlaug who was born in Iowa grew up not to farm but to save the lives of 2,000,000,000 (two billion people) at the very least. Receiving the Noble Peace Prize in 1970 for the creation of the high yielding seed which is redundant to heat and cold and that can be grown just about anywhere has given life to more people then Borlaug himself could even imagine.

I find it sad that this man has not been given any
credit for the movement of peace.
So I just want to say here on my little
blog that I shall remember Norman Borlaug

The words of a man whose time on this earth would end sooner then anyone could have known, have without a doubt come true today. I just finished watching coverage of our new president. And to tell you the truth I still can’t believe it happened. I keep slapping myself. Daily!

I think. No! I know today I saw history made. So often we see history in the making, but its often history of times we would rather forget. It is sadly so rare to see history change for the better good of mankind, for the betterment of our own better angels.

All I can saw is I look forward to seeing more history being made and to having the right to blog about it right here.

A wise President once made that statement. If you have read this blog you know which side of the fence I’m on, I don’t hide it. And I’m not here to beg for last minute votes for Barack Obama. And I’m not here to gloat, because to tell you the truth I’m not even sure if we are going to get it this time.

It has been a hard election cycle to say the least. It would be a double loss for Obama if he lost this one. I was sad to hear this his grandmother (the woman who raised him) has died before she could see this improbable journey come to pass.

All I can say is that I do not regret one second of the work I was involved in with the Obama campaign. In fact I would like to say that I admire the work that McCain staffers have done, even thought I don’t agree with them. They have however taken a stand for something.

It’s a growing problem in this country, even more for young people, who don’t seem to take a stand on anything. As Terence Mann, character in the famous Iowa filmed movie Field of Dreams said “a passion is still a passion” no matter what it is.

I know I’m going to catch fire for this but the truth is that at times I wanted to disown my county because of its totalitarian policies created under George Bush. But that changed one day in 2004 I met a man running for senate named Barack Obama. I didn’t know that he would run for president so soon after his election to the senate. However like Kennedy also a junior senator and a catholic (a double minority). Once said “Do not pray for easy lives. Pray to be stronger men.” I believe this journey will not be easy, nor should it be. But right now I must put away any petty prejudice I have and be a stronger man.

It’s two hours until the polls open and I’m ready for change.

It seems that most of the media outlets are saying the same thing. Obama? He has the election in the bag. But he wont win, because white folk are going to vote for McCain even though they claim when asked that they support Obama.

Do you buy that? Most of the people I know (who are white) speak their mind. The other day here in my small Iowa town, I can truthfully say that Obama signs out number McCain signs 5 to 1. Are all these people simply afraid of being called a hate monger?

Are white folk in the closet? Because I have to tell you, if that is true then we have some very passionate people working day and night for Obama. Are they hiding their hate?

John McCain seemed to come across as a wounded warrior, failing his que to introduce his running mate Sarah Palin. But less important he came off as smug, even arrogant. Telling supporters that he is not running because he feels he must make history, a clear remark made at Obama.

I have always made it a personal policy of mine never to attack the family member(s) of a political figure unless that person may effect decisions the political figure may make. I been talking with fellow political commentators on the validly of using “Palin Family Matters”.

First I must ask myself does that matter reflect on the public figure’s all around character. Do teens make mistakes? All the time.

Second will this matter effect decisions this person might make as an elected official? You better believe it. I’m not going to go into detail about my family’s history. However I can tell you that decisions of the son or daughter will always weigh in on the parent in the end.

And finality do matters of the personal life reflect on the candidate? Yes.
Last year while Sarah Palin was traveling in Texas, he water broke. Instead of finding a doctor in Dallas, Texas she flew back to Alaska. Folks. That is without a doubt an incredibly dangerous decision. That could have cost the life of not only Sarah Palin’s child but herself “Alaska’s commander and chief” I ask are these personal matters worthy of public debate? At least some are.

I recall watching Genarlow Wilson on a popular TV news magazine. Wilson a black teen was convicted of having consensual oral sex with a 15-year-old girl when he was 17, still a legal juvenal.

Wilson was sentenced to a 10 year prison term, which the Georgia Supreme Court ruled on a 4-3 vote that his 10-year sentence amounted to “cruel and unusual punishment.”
This ruling came after Georgia change it’s law to state that acts between teens relatively close in age a misdemeanor instead of a felony.

The system is rigged and if this case doesn’t prove that that I don’t know what would. This young man could have had normal vaginal sex with the same teen and had nothing happen to him at all. I’m happy for see Georgia rid their selves of old draconian oral sex penalty laws, but is it too late for those already in prison which don’t have the media handlers and support Wilson does? I’m afraid so.

California Evacuation Worse then Hurricane Katrina

I thought it must have been a mistake in the news control room. Tonight I saw thousands of people being ushered into San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium to seek shelter. Dare I say this image is eerily close to those images out of New Orlines in Hurricane Katrina?

Instead of shuttling trapped people at the mercy of the elements on their rooftops, these fewer helicopters shuttle water on fires that seems to have no end and an unstoppable craving for destruction. Over 900,000 people have been evacuated in fire areas as of Wednesday morning. But dose America really care what these devastating fir/es do in Southern California? Does water hold America’s ear to the disenfranchised ore then fire, a gas?

I’d rather take my chances with fir/e myself, do to the fact that I don’t know how to swim.
But are my comparisons fair? I don’t know because I’m not there. I once heard that the hindenburg was the worst disaster ever. Was it? Of course not, but with the hindenburg we are left with an undying image and the famous quote “Oh the Humanity.”

Sen. Craig: Romney "threw me under" campaign bus

U.S. Sen. Larry Craig, who flip-flopped over whether he would quit after being caught in a restroom sex scandal, said in remarks released on Monday that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney "threw me under his campaign bus."

Craig, an Idaho Republican, resigned from Romney's White House campaign after it was disclosed in August that he had been snared in an undercover sting operation in a Minnesota airport men's room.

The case has been particularly embarrassing for Republicans, since they have long billed themselves as the party of conservative family values.

Craig contends that an undercover policeman in an adjoining stall at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport misconstrued his actions on June 11 as a sexual advance. But he pleaded guilty in August to misdemeanor disorderly conduct.

"Disgraceful," Romney said at the time about Craig, who had served as co-chair of his campaign efforts on Capitol Hill.

"It reminds us of the fact that people who are elected to public office continue to disappoint," Romney had told CNBC television. "And we've seen disappointment in the White House, we've seen it in the Senate, we've seen it in Congress and frankly it's disgusting."

"He not only threw me under his campaign bus, he backed up and ran over me again," Craig said in an interview with NBC, excerpts of which were released on Monday.

The interview with "Matt Lauer Reports" will air on Tuesday, with additional coverage of it broadcast on Wednesday on the "Today" show.

As the excerpts were being released, officials in Minnesota announced that Craig had filed notice that he will continue fighting his arrest in court.

Craig's Minneapolis attorney, Thomas Kelly, filed notice with the Minnesota Court of Appeals, paying a $500 fee and saying he will try to overturn a county court judge's decision earlier this month that Craig cannot take back the disorderly conduct guilty plea he made in August.

Craig had contended he panicked and was rushed into a decision, and now wants a full hearing. But the judge said he had ample time and knew what he was doing.

In the interview, according to NBC, Craig maintained his innocence, claimed he was the victim of profiling and talked about the lack of support he has received from long-time colleagues in Congress.

Numerous Republicans, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, had urged Craig to resign and were upset when he decided to stay.

Craig also reiterated that despite his earlier comments to the contrary, he would not resign from Congress and instead would complete his third six-year term, which ends in January 2009.

Last week when Ann Coulter was a guest on The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch, she made some insensitive or perhaps even evil comments, as some would tell you. However, I ask was she right? Ann Coulter told the host Donny Deutsch who is a practicing Jew himself that “We (Christians) just want Jews to be perfected”.

However, I ask is that not what true Christianity is about? Perfection not of the body or the person but the mind and the soul? Now I’m not saying that Ann Coulter is or should be the mouthpiece for modern day Christians, but in reality she is not far off, if only a little right of center.

This weekend at CAPAC guest speaker Ann Coulter spoke of Presidential candidate John Edwards in terms that should be left for college dorm jokes and Hollywood stars of popular T.V. shows. Frankly I really could care what devil face Ann Coulter says in general. But it was an observation I made; Ann I got to hand it to you. You knocked the crowds socks off, they loved it. Many in the crowed would most likely later detest her comments, saying her comments were wrong. Funny way of showing it, after all you gave her comments a near standing ovation.

He might be a past SNL star, a former radio host for a failing broadcast company or a political commentator to some. But to the citizens of Minnesota he just very well may be their next senator. There is no more questions of his candidacy in this race, he’s in.

In his video address to the internet which was posted on AlFranken.com and YouTube.com he speaks to the citizens of Minnesota as well as anyone who cares to listen. With puppy dog looks and with a sense of humor (toned down) he stated why he is the best person to lead Minnesota forward. He spoke in support of stem cell research as well as the preservation of social security, while leaving the term of labeling himself a liberal and exchanging it for progressive. He speaks like a true Minnesotan, Franken is a student of the of the late senator Paul Wellstone, of which many consider a man who brought new life into the democratic party. Sounds almost like an old school democrat featuring core values combining it with new century democratic policy.

I think it’s time we let Al have his chance, he’s been gromed by the best in the business. I just want to see Stuart Smiley (Al Franken) debate on the floor of the senate.

Months ago I jumped onto the bandwagon, I can even take pride in saying I joined YouTube before it was popular. Not like those sons and daughter of the 60’s and 70’s who rode to Woodstock after the right people had already done so. Thus producing a buzz-kill.
YouTube has been able to bring the great power of self-promotion to anyone with a cause or idea to sell. And sure it was a great deal, it was free after all. But the service sucked from time to time and was retiled with bugs. I was turned onto LiveVideo by a fellow YouTuber PeriUrban. And I have to give him massive points on this one.

One huge! Plus with LiveVideo.com is that everything works, from email to comments. And a much better video quality over YouTube. Also the little Easter egg of being able to choose your own thumbnail preview picture, mixed with the ability of total customization of your user account, I think YouTube just might get jealous over this small David standing over its giant.

However scantily clad teenagers still dominate the most viewed pages and LiveVideo has yet to show any similarly to the community like that found on YouTube. However I prepared to say that if you’re a current YouTube user, you might want to think now about grabbing your own username. I’m not saying the levee has broken and there’s no going back, I’m just saying that YouTube like Coke just found its Pepsi.

You know what I’m talking about, online video sites like YouTube and LiveVideo are bringing the true power of online communication to anyone with a good internet connection. In just shear minutes I can post a slam video about someone I hardly know, half a world away.

One day will we be saying “Text was so ninety’s”
And we might be right. But then again are there not some things that spoken words can not bring across?

It was reviled this week that the closet in which is kept the things that we ought not talk about is bigger then we thought, at least when it comes to those with power over the masses. I’m not writing this to belittle Ted Haggard or his church in any way; in fact I truly feel heartfelt sorrow him, his wife and children, some of which have already dabbled into the ministry. What kind of looks they will get now and in the future can only boggle the mind.

I should point out also that Mark Foley should not be put into the same boat as Ted Haggard. Mark Foley, according to the evidence brought against him is nothing more that a two-bit pedophile, who somehow got into congress.

As sad as both these story’s are, they pose no real effect on the 2006 election. If you want to really piss off both parties all you have to do is become a fence rider. Someone who says “I just don’t know what to do or how to think about this issue or that issue.”

The truth is most of these people know how they are going to vote before they even step into the voting booth. They will either vote on an issue or a principal. For seventy percent of white evangelical Christians; Guns, God, Gays and abortion are always and will always be key issues.

I hate to say that there is a real danger of the Republicans loosing control of both houses, The GOP would have to loose control of key northern states. When or if this happens, the GOP would be forced to be run from a southern GOP protocol. Which will become more radicalized then anything we have ever seen before, mark my words. Worse then even the party of the 1950’s. Which in the heights of true McCarthyism; no American was safe from the sweeping hand of God appointed fundamentalism.

Therefore there is no hope for the Republican Party at its current state of being. They say confession is good for the soul. As Ted Haggard put it “I’m a liar and a deceiver.” quite frankly I think its time for the republican party to get on their knees, or for that matter, both parties. YouTube has ruined my life

I cant make it anymore simpler then that. Youtube and its infectious videos have sucked me into its near inescapable underworld of endless videos of copyrighted clips, Coke and Mentos tricks, personal and insider jokes and that Fat Star wars kid.

I should say that its not just the copyrighted content that keeps me hooked onto that evil flesh but rather the personal videos made by video bloggers or (vloger) for short. I find myself watching hours and hours of Youtube personalities like Renetto or (Walter Paul Robinett) SeanBedlam, the music of PeriUrban and the pompusness of GregSolomon.

I found myself constantly checking for new videos, never getting anything done with my life. Memos and manuscripts destined for the desks of editors have been put on the back burner, my professional life has been thrown into shambles. I don’t have timeto watch T.V. anymore, and my TeVo is getting full. It’s by the grace of other people that I get any current news into my system. I learned 24 hours after that fact that North Korea lite a candle, when I conversed this fact to friends they said “What the hell’s wrong with you? That’s old news.” they assured me.

You know I have noticed not just recently, but for a while now, many of the help boards on the internet are just filled with what I call the Open Mouth Consumer, or OMS. People who are used to have everything handed to them, like little birds. Just check out the Ebay help boards; what’s this worth? Is this old? I’m I ok? All of this information by the way can easily searched for themselves with the simple click of a mouse.

Mark my words, this will be the fall of the internet. Not that there wont be an internet anymore, its gone well beyond the hobby stage at this point. But I remember the internet back in the mid nineties back when many of your were yet to be born. The internet was an awesome community of people willing to share and help each other. A kind act would be returned by another kind act, but we have become weak. The internet used to be full of consumers who were also providers, now sadly its become a community of consumers.

That’s why I love you tube, if you haven’t checked it out, you must. It doesn’t bring back that old feeling but it comes damn close. But with all things I’m afraid that it too wont last, great things rarely last for long and more to the point free things. Because there are those who always take advantage of a good thing, and to be honest if you tube doesn’t bow to some corporate master I will be amazed. I remember a time when I had a chance to buy Google stock when their first IPO came out, at a dirt cheap price. All I know is that when you tube goes public I’m not going to worry about my blog or you tube videos, I’ll simply be at the beach. Taking advantage you ask? Well maybe, but someone has to feed these damn bats.

I remember hearing republicans bitching about the Regan mini-series, about how it portrayed a fictional president biography. Now democrats are bitching about ABC’s made for T.V. movie about the events leading up to 9/11. And I talking about members of my own party affiliation, take my advice, it’s a movie, it’s that simple.

Do movies take creative liberties? Of course. I know this movie which no one has seen as of yet, places some of the blame on the hands of Bill Clinton, wow, get over it. I remember seeing the trailer for this movie a few weeks ago and I must admit that it looked good as far as movies go. In fact I plan on watching it, rather tivo.

It just irks me that we have to take everything to this level, and by the way I don’t plan on coming back on here and tell all of you what I thought of this movie. Why? because it’s a movie, and don’t give me this garbage about how movies influence the culture of the world, come on if that where true no one in their right mind would have re-elected George Bush.

This Blog posting is one which I though really hard about posting and it came to the point where I felt that if I didn’t post this then it would just eat me up. What am I freaked out about? The fish symbol. Now first of all this is not a Christian basing rant, for one I call myself a Christian.

But it just seems that every time I pull behind a car that has a “Jesus Fish?” emblem glued to the back of their car I get this over whelming feeling that I’m sitting behind a mindless republican. The YouTube Bug Has Bitten Me

Boredom has set in here at the Bat Farm and I have resorted to viewing the “ultra hip” new web communities on the net, one of them being the video host known as YouTube. It’s good for a quick laugh once and a while, or just type in the subject of your choice (adult video fends seek elsewhere).

It was then when I discovered many of the travel and personal opinion videos out there on YouTube. It was then that it hit me that Gee; maybe I should take a shot at this. As you know for a while I did host a pod cast, but that just didn’t work for me, you might say that it was not personal enough for me.

Now I still don’t know if I’m going to do this or not, I already have a camera, a digital HI8 from the late 90’s that could still be compatible with the right video adapter. Although I just might go and drop $300 for a simple feature fire wire adaptable camera. If anyone out there has any suggestions I’m all ears.

I also want to add that there are some “YouTubers” out there that have bitten me with the nasty YouTube bug. cinderellaferret whose video is hosted on this posting, I just want to say thanks for the laughs and insight.

Today I checked Amazon and found a new title listed under the search term Hunter S. Thompson. “Fear and Loathing in Bat Country: Hunter S Thompson Versus Dracula” by Jason Andrew; I read an excerpt and found myself being robbed. Like someone trying to rewrite the Great Gatsby, it felt dirty. It’s one thing to write fan fiction from a “well dead” figure, but it’s another thing to capitalize on starving fans looking for something new from a man that could have offered us so much more.

So I say Jason Andrew; not cool. But to be fair I will offer you, Mr. Andrew another chance. Send me a copy of your book. I’m not paying for it, not a chance.

I know that I haven’t posted to the rusty old blog in a few months, but you have to understand that things at the Bat Farm have been complicated. I’m in the middle of a border dispute here, and if things keep going as they are, it might delay me from this blog even more. My fortified complex here has been compromised, by undesirables, of which I am in the middle of dispatching in a non-lethal and U.N. approved manner.

But back to world news; will the middle east lead to the end of the world? My prediction: No such luck.
I have been watching the national T.V. news chains and have seen a recurring theme, Israel Vs. Hezbula are signs of the end, apocalypse and the Rapture.

It’s a sad thing to see Evangelical Christian’s praise events in the middle east. They are one step away from walking downtown with a sign saying “The End is Near.” Americans Christians have bought a Dogma, one in which its ok to trash the environment, make war and throw civil rights out the window, because Jesus is coming back, and soon, which may be correct. However Christians need to realize that issues like the Rapture, which is found no where in the Bible (trust me I’ve looked) is relatively a recent phenomenon, started around the turn of the century, much like many people thought a few years ago back in 1999.

Theologians have made millions of dollars producing programs, movies, magazines and books to back the rapture claim. Likewise when I buy a Kevin Trudeau book and the information turns out to be not as it seems, I call the book junk and sell it on ebay. Now millions of converts buying into this theory, in thirty years from now, nothing happing, millions of suckers, you get the picture.

The scary part of this while picture is that we have leaders which also believe this theory. Some of those who believe such claims might also believe that they themselves should manipulate world events to support their own conclusion. My advice? Just calm down, please, I’m trying to sleep.

I found this in my junk box. A year ago around this time I was pulled over en route to the Bat Farm by a local law enforcement officer. He claimed I threw a cigarette out the window. When I tried to explain to him that I don’t smoke and that all the car windows at the time were locked up because of a bad fuse he refused to listen.

Da Vinci’s Last Stand

You might say that I have been waiting over a year to see The Da Vinci Code adapted onto the big screen. I should clarify that I am a Da Vinci Code Fan. There are those who call themselves Da Vinci Code believers; however they are few and far between. Gay marriage won’t destroy regular marriage nor will The Da Vinci Code destroy the modern Christian church.

Is the movie fiction? Yes without a doubt. Is the movie factual? You better believe it. The modern church’s foundation is anchored on bloodshed, lots of bloodshed. Are there other Gospels not included in the Bible? No question.

I walked into our multi-plex theater here on the Missouri river flood plane. The crowed was mixed and not quite half full. Although I felt there was uneasiness in the audience. When the movie was over I felt no different about the world around me, or the religion that dominates the western world. Because after all it was only a movie.

There was no visible protest in this part of the country. But I’m sure somewhere, someone is already worked up and is protesting this fictional movie. On my way back from the movie theater I noticed something worse then a movie the question’s beliefs. A homeless man, I’m sure there were more. Maybe if you took care of him first I would take your protest seriously.

But that will never happen. Not in the last 2000 years.

Another Movie Filmed in Mediocre Town

Here at the Bat Farm I have a clear view of the neighbors to the west, being Omaha, Nebraska. Which has seen a jump in movie productions in the past few years. Back in 02 About Schmidt was filmed in and around the Omaha area. In fact, if you look closely at the very first scene of the film, you can see the perimeter of the Bat Farm.

There was talk among people who knew the star of the film (Jack Nicholson) that he could have lost it, you know, in the thought factory. Reason being? “Omaha is just too depressing.” and while at the end of the film the character didn’t put a gun in his mouth, the movie still showed the dark still life of America.

Now four years later another film about Omaha has just finished production. The film entitled “Out of Omaha” staring Dave Foley, host of Celebrity Poker (which I hate like poison) is a movie about a embattled father who try’s to turn his family around by-. Screw it. Are you kidding? It’s just another movie made in Omaha.

Make movie’s where they’re supposed to be made, in Canada. Of course I reserve the right to retract this statement when I direct my straight to bargain shelf at the Costco movie.

Hollywood: More Flies with Vinegar

On May 19th, Hollywood is going to release The Da Vinci Code in hopes of being the start of a big blockbuster summer for film companies and their producers. It’s was a record low for Hollywood last year and some predict that it’s not going to be much better this year.

I think I have the prefect plan if Hollywood wants to listen. Make more flicks that really piss of the church folk. And I don’t want to sound like I’m discourteous them, but to be honest, lately, they’ve been kind of wacky. Just think of all the movies that have ruffled their Anglo-Saxon feathers: Brokeback Mountain, Dogma, Midnight Cowboy, The Last Temptation of Christ, Baby Doll, and Fahrenheit 911.

It should be noted that almost all of these movies were set to earn little, if anything at the box office. But when the right hand of God touches a film; there’s just no going back. And maybe that’s a good thing. It should also be noted that most of these movies are independent.

Maybe it’s that Hollywood doesn’t make movies that I want to see anymore. Have the corporate masters sucked all the creative juices from the legends and in-vitro fertilized a new breed of film maker who spend more time programming new ring tones and sipping their flavor water then they do in the editing room? I hope not.

Today is the big day in America. It’s Mayday. Also the first organized walkout of illegal aliens in the American workforce. It’s 5:30 AM here at the Bat Farm, soon we will see if the fruits of the Latino groups will pay off.

I heard someone today talking at a local grocery store that they plan on “blaring American music all day long.” or maybe go as far as flying the Mexican flag upside down. I almost had to laugh when this person said “If these people come to America they should at least learn to speak American.” note that “American” is not a language. English is. Redneck you might ask? Maybe. You can tell each side of the debate fairly easily. Those who are against “illegal immigration” say three things: Jobs, language barrier, and national security.

Those who do support it repeat the same things. “They do the jobs American’s wont do.” “Why would you want to take away the American dream from some second world citizen?” “We all are immigrants.”

Both sides are wrong. It’s simple really. It’s illegal. Are lots for things illegal? Yes, especially some of the really fun things, but that’s getting ahead of our self’s.

Are all Americans born from immigrants? Yes, unless you’re Native American. But you really have to think about that in 1910, when America’s melting pot was heating up and the population of the United States was twenty million, immigration was the right thing, a good thing in fact. Now with the population rising nearing 300 million, it’s a good idea to take a second thought.

Fact is I’m a Democrat. And I’m sad to say many in the party would be turning over in their graves over my views. But I don’t care, nor should you. More legal, controlled immigration is good for America. Just don’t put the mouth before the food.

As for the recent controversy over the National Anthem being recorded in Spanish; If you guys can add some nice Tijuana Brass and make a beat that I can move to, I’m all for it.

I just noticed today how may weather blogs are out there. With all the online weather tools, Doppler radar, wind reports, satellite photos. You can find yourself arguing with the local weather man. “I know what’s going to happen mister weather man, I went to Jim’s weather shack.”
Take that so called master of the local forecast, beat him, feed him to the lions. I don’t need your stupid five day outlook, let alone your ill-predicted seven day.

I find myself standing outside while the public alert system is blaring in the background. With my battery backup laptop no more then five feet away. Seven Steps to Better Blogging

If you’re a blogger then you have to admit, I know it’s tough. But your just lazy. There are so many things to do in the day besides your blog. But if you want to have a successful blog then you going to have to commit to posting at least three or four times a week. If your blog has tons of nice pictures, anecdotes and cute little quotes posted all over the place, but no story. Why would a come back every week?

Rule number one: Have something to say, and say it often.

Rule number two: Admit when your wrong.

There is nothing worse then a blogger is so full of themselves that he or she cant admit when there’re is wrong. Or worse, a blogger who lies. I once clicked on to someone’s blog because they had an article about how George Bush wants to build a bridge to Puerto Rico . It was a lie. In fact you may ask: are you lying now? Yes! You see, always tell the truth.

Rule Number three: Pictures are awesome, just don’t flood my screen.

I’m sure if you have had time to scroll through blogger’s blog roll your bound to come across someone posting photos on their blog, often times photos I want to look at.
But when your photos are humongous and go three or four page lengths, your blog is going to look more like a family news letter.
Keep your photos on a sidebar out of the way of your writing. If visitors like what you write, they’ll look at your photos. Use a photo hosting service like flicker. Its free and easy to use.

Rule Number Four: Ditch the Disco Ball and Rotten Music

This rule is how most of the time I can judge a blog within the first five seconds of visiting. If your blog has tons of flashing banners, buttons and music; I’m going to hit the back button with zero prejudice.
There is nothing I dislike more then clicking on a blog link then within seconds, blasted with the lyrics of some unknown punk band. Not everyone likes your music, in fact they hate your music. Sometimes am all alone and everyone in the house asleep and without warning I'm hit.
If you like a band then say so, write about them. Putting music files on web pages was really cool back in 1995, probably before you were born.

If you though that poker and other undesirables have taken over television leaving you with nothing more then nice memories and those little bony scraps of T.V. yesteryear. Well my friend, your dead wrong.

I had almost given up on some of the more life specific channels like Techtv, which was sold to the corporate masters and turned into G4. Which now is nothing more then a constant pimp-o-rama changing technology for fast cars and shinny rims, and flaunt the idea of being a cam whore are a real career choice. None the less, I have let Techtv die the way all good television does.

I was ready to dig another hole to throw my preverbal television set into the deep. I was ready to let another channel die. The travel channel. I knew it was only a matter of time, poker had forced it’s ugly head into the tent so to speak and there was no point in turning back.

Then on day out of the blue I fired up the old box to find that a new face had landed on the travel channel. Anthony Bourdain a New York cook with a French background, who by all accounts has as much distaste for the world as I do. I could see right away that he was not like the rest of the hacks playing T.V. hosts on any other network. This guy proudly lights up a cigarette after almost every take, this man likes his drink and he is not ashamed.

He is full of lewd jokes and sexual references thrown in from time to time, and pulls it off with taste that could match almost any New York intellectual. He has a deep distaste for other television personalities who dare call themselves chef's, although he would admit he himself is one.

Reality television you ask? I don’t think so. Or as Bourdain would say: Fuck reality television, lets eat a cobra heart and a sheep’s testicle

The religious right have now stepped into overdrive. With possible protests nationwide, those opposed to the Da Vinci Code are flipping out over the buzz of the accompanying movie staring Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou. Before I go any further I would like to state one last time. It’s a Novel num-nuts, and a good one at that. I know that some who never had any formal education might not understand what a novel or for that matter, fiction is.

Don’t blame me, don’t blame James Fry or Dan Brown. You can blame Clinton if you want, that a given anyway. Trust me, your not going to hell for reading a novel or for that matter, any book. So do yourself a favor and stop piling wood into your blazing book burning inferno and pick up a copy and read it. I was talking to someone the other day and they explained to me with much distaste that The Da Vinci Code is going to destroy America’s churches. Really? I poked further, asking him why it was so evil. But for some reason all he could say what I’ve been hearing for months: The Da Vinci Code is evil, don’t read it. Oh yea, and where not sure why.

I’m not going to sit here and debate all or any of the idea’s brought up in the novel, why? Because it’s a novel, nothing more, nothing less.

Do I believe in The Da Vinci Code? Why don’t you ask me if I believe in The Great Gatsby, Gone with the Wind or Star Wars. You really want to know why I don’t talk about the Death Star or the Rebel Alliance? Because it’s not freaking real.

They’re Here and They’re ...Queer... Crash

It’s not a common activity here at the Bat Farm, nor is it something I plan my day around. But this year for the first time in a long time I really enjoyed the Oscars.

The onetime two-line hack Jon Stewart took the Oscars to a brand new height, which for the first time took no prisoners. The baby-toned monologs fit for the whole family were scrapped and traded for the likes of late night T.V.

I’m sure that there was no doubt about the winners this year. Philip Seymour Hoffman pulled away with best actor, for which he played elegantly, probably his best role of his life, his being the most humble of all the acceptance speeches. Reese Witherspoon’s acceptance speech on the other hand, at least in my judgment was a flipping sacrilege.

There were other uncomfortable moments Dolly Parton made me hide in the bathroom for fifteen minutes, similar to when an “Asshole Aunt” comes to visit.

It was just after ten when Jack Nicholson, a person which sexual identity has never been in doubt took to the stage to present the last Oscar, for best picture. I couldn’t help to think of his role of the gay bashing neighbor in As Good As it Gets. Thinking he may say something like “Ok you pansies, calm down, calm down.”

And the Oscar goes to……..Crash.
You could feel a preverbal gasp throughout America’s liberal and bohemian communities. But unlike other years, the awards were not dominated by one film, which is something we need more of in the coming years.

Let it be said that I’m scared of Bats, even though I live here at the bat farm. We all have to live with things with don’t like or understand, some more then others. Life may be a series of events, even as I sit here with two rowdy dogs making a muck in the background, making if impossible for me to sleep. And even while my problems which I plan on keeping to myself seem so complex. I’m sure that somewhere, someone is much worse off. So to a take glee in that fact? No.

Living without guilt involves immense lip-biting. Guilt is a good thing. It’s your mind’s way to tell you that your shit has gone far enough. A none guilty mind is a dangerous thing, at least I think so. When guilt builds up and when it’s time to deal with it, you can begin to have Hemmingway thoughts.

Just west of the Missouri river flood plane yesterday, America buried one of their own. I’m sorry that I don’t remember his name. There was a group out there amongst the friends and family which find that now is the perfect time to cause pain to other people in dire need of support. You may have heard of this group, a Baptist church based out of Topeka Kansas. I’m not even going to mention their name, to which I found myself I wasted to much of my breath on.

It’s clear to me in the final analysis, when their guilt catches up with them… I would much rather battle my own demons then spend a day in their shoes.

Keeping up with the Bat Farm

It has been a few weeks since I last posted to the rusty old blog, so I thought that I would toss a few words into the old combine to see what they produce.
As I’m writing this message I’m in a heated debate with the local weather man. The subject? Snow or no snow. So far this winter we here on the Mississippi flood plane have had only three snow falls all winter, producing no more then a few feet of snow. Is someone up there angry?

On a lighter note I have finished compiling my new chapbooks….. Needle in the Nightstand: The Fast Times of Jarhead Jerry and the Flood Plane Companion: The last Ride of Boxcar Bob. We’re looking at a publish date around April 5th.

Also I would like to point out that my last chapbook “Mr. Cheney has a Shotgun” is purely coincidental….

It seems lately I have produced a Blog of obituaries. Well it looks like I’m going to have to fire up the old computer for one more. Many of you know that I’m a fan of Coast to Coast AM, now with primarily George Noory hosting.

The founder of the program is Art Bell, he is someone who not broke but smashed the mold of radio talk show hosts. I am sad to say that Art’s wife Ramona Bell has died of an apparent Asthma attack, she died in her sleep. I’m really at a loss of words. Those of you who know art will testify that Ramona is Art’s everything. This must be hell for you Art.

The Death of Christmas at the Bat Farm

It was the night before Christmas and all through the house not a Republican was complaining not even Orrin Hatch himself. The generals were all snug in their beds while visions of chemical weapons danced in their heads. And the President? Yes; Sorry it’s still George W. Bush….

It ended around an hour ago here at the Bat Farm. This has to be one of the most politically charged Christmas seasons on record. I can’t enjoy my life without some putts trying to cut in on my action. Here at the Bat Farm we took no part in the outside world’s grievances.

We exchanged our cheep plastic trinkets and items that plug into the wall and make a worly noise. I had a chance to see Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory. All I can say is this is not the uncle Willy that I grew up on, Jean Wilder had compassion. This uncle Willy looked more like a pedophile with a bad drug habit.

But none the less Christmas at the Bat Farm this year was pretty much uneventful. May the Great Brown Bat live on for another year.

Queue the music; put on some walking in Memphis, ok better. As you may knew by now John Spencer, who played Leo Mcgarry on The West Wing has died of a sudden heart attack this week. Let us remember him first as a good actor, a damn good actor.

Oh John. We knew you so long and underrated you just the same. You showed us your skill and made us not endure your personal memoirs of decent. There was no celebrity marriage or a book. You kept to yourself and you never added to the worlds problems. Might it be said you would never buy a drunk a drink?

And I say if the people of Missouri can elect a dead man; then by god we can elect a fictional character in a fictional T.V. show.

Christmas of Fear at the Bat Farm

It’s been a few weeks since I have posted to the rusty old blog. The Christmas season comes but once a year. And thank God to, at least we’ll have a good dose of fear this year to keep us warm. Two years ago it was Anthrax, last year it was SARS now this year, thank God, it’s Bird flu. And when you look at all of these things in hindsight we can find one common thread, nothing much became of these things.

I would say that ever since that assassination of President Kennedy, this county has enjoyed year after year of a Christmas season of fear. Be it the fear of mass layoffs, impending war, communist subversion or diseased cranberries. We love fear, we are a fear eating people. Just think about it. How many of these things in which he have been afraid of actually happened to you or I?

Mark my words; in four of five months Bird Flu will be a non-subject. We get so freaked out we have to buy ourselves a comfort gift and watch the Charlie Brown Christmas special. And by the way, were are all the parents in those cartoons?

Today the Drudge Report was the first to report that during a live speech by VP Cheney was a visible “X” that was repeatedly flashed over Cheney’s head in a subliminal motion. No one knows who was responsible, yet.

Now I’ll be the first to tell you that I’ve been disgusted by the Bush administration and have voiced my fair share of anger. But with all the things the opposition can do; marking out VP’s, distributing war crimes poster in malls and degrading extended family members is just not the right thing to do. Not that I don’t understand why they did what they did; they’re angry and realize they can’t do much about it.

Only through knowledge will we ever overcome those who mean ill to other men. And we have something going for us that they will never have; we’re right. Look around, people fear their government; and fear always turns to hate.

Just remember "The wicked flee when no man pursueth."

The Death Penalty: What’s in it for you?

Stan "Tookie" Williams, former leader and founder of the California street gang Crips sits in San Quentin State Prison waiting to die. Found guilty of murder, now the state is going to kill him.

Williams who is a Nobel Prize nominee wrote a series of children’s books teaching kids not to join gangs and not to kill kids. Yesterday over a thousand people protested outside the maximum security prison. Claming the Williams has changed his ways and it a growing influence of peace to young black children.

When it comes to granting clemency I don’t think good deeds and kind words holds a candle to logic. The death penalty what a concept. Kill someone and if it’s under Special
Circumstances the state will kill you.

It’s clearly a violation of the separation of church and state. Think about it; the death penalty is not an ethical issue or when it gets right down to it a moral issue. Most popular beliefs in any formable religion also hold a deep felt spot for justice or revenge. The human brain has always had a need for that powerful drug called revenge. Call it what it is; revenge, simple. Don’t say that these people are still a danger to society. In the past five years only two prisoners have escaped from death row. Both caught within hours.

Leave these people alone; put them in a room and throw away the room. Because in the end the death penalty doesn’t do anything, Religion ruled the dark ages and we have enough blood on our hands already.

Owning Ideas…. What an Idea

The Guardian came out with a good piece today; it questions whether the notation of being able to patent ideas as intellectual property is such a good idea. For example Amazon has licensed out the patented idea of letting costumers review products on their website. Google has patented the online ad and Microsoft is trying to patent XML. I’m sire that Ebay would just love to be able to patent the idea of “online auctions.”

How far are we going to go? Come on lets face it, no one can own an idea let alone patent one. Your thoughts are your own and so are mine. Got a good idea? Good, then use it. And if someone comes along to cut in on your action then too bad. That the free market place for you. It truly is survival of the fittest.

O.J. Speaks Out and for Once I Agree

O.J. Simpson came out today after the civil suite in Robert Blake’s case ended. The Civil suite specified that there was evidence to show that Blake was civilly reasonable in the death of his wife. Awarding the family of Blake’s wife the sum of 40 million dollars.

Clearly this is not an issue of guilt here. It was found that the defendant was not guilty yet it turns out that he’s “kind of” guilty. Is this really the way the justice work? Not to over simplify it but either he’s guilty or not guilty.

The United State justice system has one shot to prove their case. In this case and in others they failed either because the person was truly not guilty or because they failed to make the case stick. I’m not familiar with the Blake case, but it’s clear that in hind sight there was a breakdown in justice at it’s core.
O.J. Simpson calls this “double jeopardy” and I strangely for once agree with him.

NBC to Offer On-Demand Movies…. Oh Great

Days after AOL announced that they will offer classic television shows on-demand. NBC announced they will be offering movies under the Universal label sometime early next year. The price per download has not yet been set, however a good source had said the price will be between $2.95 to $6.00 per download.

It looks like for now movies will only be available under the Universal label. The titles will range from new releases which are currently available on the Pay-Per-View service. To shows such as Jerry Springer uncensored and blind date.

No thanks NBC I’ll just watch LOST and hang myself in the bathroom.

Giant Victory for Bloggers.....… Bloggers are Journalists says FEC

A giant leap for bloggers came today when the Federal Election Commission issued an advisory that said “FiredUp” a network of bloggers qualifies to be labeled as “journalists” and therefore exempt from federal campaign finance laws. It is the fear among bloggers that federal campaign laws could hinder the right to post their personal opinions on the web.

First Snow Fall at The Bat Farm

It finality came, you can mark it down. Yesterday was the first snow fall this autumn. Blowing snow, blood on the slick sidewalk and just deep enough in the Missouri flood-plan to take shelter of the government hacks and the long arm of the patriot act.

Leave it to the British to fake space Travel

I don’t like the constipated block of reality shows on the market right now. But I have to admit that I would probably watch the new British reality show coming out sometime next year which in a few words, fakes a space mission for a selected group of participants.

The program produced by Channel 4 out of England, will be taking selected participants which are currently waiting in the wings for a chance to go to the place they think is a Russian training facility. When in reality it’s an undisclosed location in England. Apparently the same model of the Space Shuttle that was used for the movie Space Cowboys (I want my money back) will be used as the main set fixture. Also large screens and speakers will be used to simulate blastoff and orbit.

I love this idea. All they have to do now it figure out how to fake zero gravity, G-forces, the true curvature of the earth and the unavailable boom mic the falls in front of the window.

Since 9/11 U.S. has Detained 83,000 “Person’s of Interest”

The Associated Press is reporting that since the fall of 2001 the Untied States has detained approximately 83,000 people. The number comes form two primary sources; the two fronts in the “War on Terror” Iraq and Afghanistan.

It is John McCain who is leading the fight to bad cruel and unusual punishment for U.S. detainees. Some have questioned if the current administration endorses torture as Vice President Cheney has asked that the CIA be exempt.

Sony pulls Controversial CD’s

It looks like Sony BMG entertainment had been bent to the will of consumer advocacy groups. Sony said today that they would start pulling some of their titles with the new controversial copyright protection on some of their most popular titles which will according to some groups leave the user’s computer copy to virus’s and malicious script. The company will also offer a swap to consumers who bought the copy-protected disks.

It was Sony who altered their (EULA) in which among the new conditions would force the consumer to delete any Sony BMG music from their computer in the case that the user files for bankruptcy.

No one truly knows what causes Gulf War syndrome. We do know that with some serenity is does exist. What causes it is anyone’s guess. Depleted Uranium shells, Anthrax vaccine and deliberate malice on the part of the U.S. government Are Many a theory.

Many believe that the cause my in fact be Depleted Uranium shells used by the Army used to slice through armor and tanks. This weapon which easily melts through tank armor like a hot knife through butter is a modern marvel, there’s no doubt about that. The only problem is once the shell is fired it puts off millions of particles of uranium which easily circulates throughout the air and is inhaled with little effort.

In this war its unclear how many shells were fired. However this in is not a factor. If you just look at the post war photos from Gulf war one you’ll see the dozens of Iraqi tanks squashed like fire ants.
The life of Uranium of 4.5 million years. And that same sand in which we treaded in 14 years ago we are treading in again.
